Why can't TV be used as a monitor?

Author:admin / Publication time:2022-03-14

The question of whether a TV can replace a monitor has been around for a long time. Due to the same principle in reality, TVs are even cheaper in terms of price, and now TV interfaces are very rich. HDMI has become a standard configuration, and there is no obstacle to connecting to a graphics card. Therefore, many people think that replacing a monitor with a TV is very cost-effective. But there are actually many differences between the two, and it is not recommended to use a TV as a monitor.Today, let's take a look at why a TV cannot be used as a monitor.

The color expression style is completely different

Due to its tendency towards entertainment, television is more focused on color tuning to please the attention of users. For example, presenting a picture of green plants, the TV may optimize the color to turn it into bright green. Although slightly darker green may be more realistic, bright green is undoubtedly more eye-catching. At the same time, the color standards used by televisions and monitors are completely different. Currently, the color standard used by monitors is sRGB, while televisions use the Rec.709 standard or a few DCI-P3 standards.

The reason why monitors can display precise colors to the maximum extent is due to the daily needs of users. Because when we use a monitor, whether it's for photo editing or printing, we need the most realistic visual effect. If the color deviation is large, it will affect the overall effect of the work. For example, if we want to print a photo, it will appear bright red on the TV, but it will turn dark red when printed. Inconsistent color adjustments also result in the TV not being able to be used on the desktop.

Gray scale is not within a range

The range of grayscale display is completely different between televisions and monitors, except for the color not being standardized. Usually, we measure the screen's restoration ability with a grayscale between 0 and 256. For professional monitors, due to the need for text or image processing work, the monitor can basically display grayscale between 0 and 256, which means that the monitor can display 256 levels divided from pure black to pure white. However, television does not have such a strict ability to restore grayscale. Most can only display grayscale between 16 and 235, with all displays below 16 being black and all displays above 235 being pure white.
